Ethnic-cleansing in Jammu
Chronology of Events

May 3, 2001:A group of militants came to attack Dev Raj, a VDC member in Basantgarh area of Udhampur. Dev Raj had gone to attend a marriage party. The terrorists enquired about him from his family members. The family members refused to disclose his whereabouts. The militants ran away with his official weapon along with 150 rounds. 

May 11, 2001:Three matric students—Narinder Singh, Dhruv Singh and Rajinder Singh were kidnapped by militants, while they were on their way to school in Gandoh. 

May 12, 2001:At village Bharki militants kidnapped Rajesh Singh at gun point and fled to a forest area. 

May 13, 2001:Bodies of a young woman and her 10 year old child were fished out from Chenab in Ramban. 

May 16, 2001:The militants forced their entry into the house of Chuni Lal at Sunder Dachhan in Kishtwar at about 12 Noon and shot him dead. 

May 16, 2001:At Marmat village in Doda, terrorists set ablaze houses of Beli Ram and Prem Singh. 

June 4, 2001:At village Bathoi in Mahore, terrorists forced their entry into the house of Onkar Singh, a VDC member and brother of Lal Singh and beat him up. His gun was snatched. Onkar managed to escape from their custody. Terrorists then turned to the house of Lal Singh and knocked at the entry door. The moment his daughter Neelam (16) opened the door, terrorists opened fire on her, injuring her critically Lal Singh also fired in retaliation. Some other VDC members who had been injured in an IED blast at Serni Nullah joined Lal Singh and foiled the massacre plan of militants. Instead of appreciating the bravery of Lal Singh and other five VDC members, an ASI posted in Gool Police Station, reports said, charged Rs 2000 each from Lal Singh and others for not booking them in "fake" cases of atrocities on some villagers. Abdul Rashid, watchman of Sildhar village, had allegedly instigated ASI. VDC members have since brought the matter to the notice of senior police officers. 

July 6, 2001:Militants forced their entry into the house of Ram Chander son of Keplu in village Dhansal, Mahore. He was shot dead on the spot. 

Aug 1-2, 2001:Terrorists attacked the house of Prem Singh son of Pratap Singh at village Bathoi in Mahore during night. Prem Singh and cops stationed there returned the fire. Militants then threw a grenade which exploded in the house, causing injuries to his two daughters Kailash Devi (20) and Shanka Devi (16). After half an hour long exchange of firing, militants escaped. 

Meanwhile, at village Alimbas in Paristan area of Banihal, three militants-locals with faces covered with masks, entered and demolished a religious place of minority community. Another temple was set on fire by the militants. While fleeing from the spot, the militants thrashed Kamal Singh, who had objected to militant's attack on the religious places. 

Two girls belonging to minority community were shot at by militants in Mahore and injured seriously. 

Aug 11, 2001:Four militants attacked a patrol party of VDC members at village Haddar in Kishtwar. In the encounter Sanjay Kumar son of Nek Ram was killed. 

Aug 13, 2001:Three teachers identified as Kirpal Singh, Dwarka Nath Raina, both residents of Poonch and Bashir Ahmed Tantray, resident of Mandi were kidnapped from village Arai in Mandi in broad day light. A group of five militants entered the school and lined up all eight teachers. They sought their identity and later confirmed it from the attendance register. Bashir belongs to a particular sect of the majority community. They were whisked to a forest area and released eight hours later. According to the staff and students of the school, two of the militants looked like locals. 

Aug 14, 2001:Following a tip off, Rashtriya Rifles troops foiled an attempt by an HM terrorist to carry out minority killings in Thalela village, near Doda. Soon the troops laid a cordon and captured Ahmed Mir, the HM terrorist of the same village. The terrorist confessed that he was tasked by top HM "commanders of the area to carry out minority killings in Thalela, 25 kms from Doda, on the even of Independence Day. 

Aug 17, 2001:Subversives set ablaze two houses of Chibbu Ram and Ram Saran in Sangldan area under the jurisdiction of Gool Police Station in Udhampur. Authorities, a report said, are now planning to shift the isolated houses of Hindus into clusters so as to provide them security cover. 

Aug 24, 2001:A middle-aged man Vishwamitter and his wife were kidnapped by four militants from their house at Dhar Sakri in Peeri area of Koteranka in the evening. Security forces found their bullet-riddled corpses in a forest area of Koteranka. 

Aug 24, 2001:A militant in combat dress shot at and seriously injured a 24 year old labourer Balkar Singh, resident of Ransu, Reasi in Seri forest area of Nowshera. He was returning to his rented house after day's work in Seri forests. He was intercepted by a militant who asked him to show his I-Card. He complied and was asked to go ahead. As Balkar moved, the militant fired a shot from behind and escaped. 

Meanwhile, Bihari Singh was fired upon by militants at Nalthi in Bhaderwah tehsil. 

Aug 26, 2001:Dead body of Hemraj, son of Tej Ram, resident of Kuntwar, was recovered from Kuntwar forests this afternoon. He was kidnapped from near his house two days back by two militants. His body bore the marks of torture and gun shots. 

Aug 26, 2001:Police and VDC foiled an attempt by three LeT terrorists to execute yet another massacre of minorities in hilly Dansal village of Arnas by apprehending one of the militants, while two others escaped. Bashir Ahmed, the LeT terrorist revealed that he had descended on the village from atop a hill to indulge in selective killings of the minorities at the behest of Lashkar "commander" for Arnas identified as Abu Halaal, a Pakistani.
